The cracking bunch of scientists in the team
Dr Tim Allison
I am the research group leader and started my lab at the School of Physical and Chemical Sciences at the University of Canterbury in 2018. Prior to this I was the Senior Team Leader in the laboratory of Professor Dame Carol Robinson at the University of Oxford. I completed my BSc(Hons) (1st class) (2007) and PhD in Biochemistry (2012) in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Canterbury, where I was part of Professor Emily Parker's laboratory (now at Ferrier Research Institute, Victoria University of Wellington).
At the University of Canterbury I am also an Associate Investigator in the Biomolecular Interaction Centre, and at the Maurice Wilkins Centre for Molecular Biodiscovery.
If you'd be interested in joining the group check out the Opportunities and Research pages and get in touch!
Kate Wallace (2024)
Kate was an Honours student co-supervised with Dr Jodie Johnston. Having previous worked in our group as an undergraduate, Kate researched conserved mechanisms of cooperative regulation in vitamin K2 biosynthesis.
Abby Meynell (2024)
Abby was an Honours student co-supervised with Dr Jodie Johnston. Abby investigated cooperativity and allostery in Mycobacterium tuberculosis MenD.
Rene Gimpl (2024–)
Rene is a Master of Science student co-supervised with Dr Jodie Johnston and Dan Foley. His project work is in the development of selective kinase inhibitors/chemical probes.
Irene Anthony (2023–)
Irene is a Doctor of Philosophy student co-supervised with Professor Ren Dobson. Her research is on TRAP transporters.
Shari Webber (Summer 2023)
Shari was a summer student in the group, who worked on PhaC synthases.
Viet Anh Hoang (2022–)
Viet Anh is a Doctor of Philosophy student co-supervised with Dr Jodie Johnston . His research is on the structural biology of proteins involved in bioplastic production, glycan biosynthesis, and secretion system effectors.
Tina Du (2022–)
Tina was an Honours student co-supervised with Dr Jodie Johnston. She has continued with us for her PhD studies, looking at the enzymes involved in quinone regulation and biosynthesis.
Michelle Klein (2021–)
Michelle was a Master of Science student co-supervised with Dr Jodie Johnston. She has continued with us for her PhD studies, focussed on PhaC synthases and their role in the production of bioplastics.
Dr Thu Ho (2019–)
Thu is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow who has been supported by the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation, the Maurice Wilkins Centre, Marsden grants, and the Biomolecular Interaction Centre.
Dave Wood (2019–2024)
Dave was a Doctor of Philosophy student co-supervised with Professor Ren Dobson. His work centred on mechanism of Streptococcus pneumoniae NanR gene repression and allosteric induction in bacterial sialoregulation.
James Titterington (2019–2024)
James was a Doctor of Philosophy student co-supervised with Dr Jodie Johnston. His research was on N-linked glycan biosynthesis in bacteria, and the enzymes involved in this pathway.
Connor O'Rourke (2019–2020)
Connor was a Master of Science student co-supervised with Dr Jodie Johnston. In his research he investigated MenD from S. aureus, E. coli, and M. smegmatis.
Hannah Neville (Summer 2018)
Hannah was a University of Canterbury Summer Research Scholarship recipient in the group, co-sponsored by the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation. She investigated enzymes involved in C. jejuni glycosylation processes.
